Welcome to the Milk Room
The C.S. Mott Children's and Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital (C&W)
at Michigan Medicine is home to the first formula and breast milk
preparation room in a pediatric hospital nationwide which provides fully
staffed services 24 hours daily. This operation, the Milk Room, opened in
December 2011 and operates to safely store, prepare, and deliver
infant and pediatric feedings of mixed formulas and breast milk to
inpatients. The Milk Room operates using the best practices outlined
by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and by the American
Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. The Milk Room utilizes
a centralized, lean operation for feeding preparation. The Milk Room
staff are proud to serve at least 50-60% of the inpatient population
at C&W every day.
Services related to breast milk (not all inclusive):
- Storage of frozen breast milk during inpatient hospitalization
- Breast milk drop-off window open 24 hours per day
- Accurate tracking of breast milk inventory via Milk Room Inventory Database
- Twice daily preparation and delivery of fortified breast milk to the
patient's in-room refrigerator
- Supplies and services for packing breast milk at discharge for safe
transportation home
Breast milk related services for infants with unique nutritional
and medical needs:
- Skimmed breast milk for infants with chylothorax
- Heat Pasteurized Donor Human Milk from a milk bank certified by the
Human Milk Banking Association of North America© for infants who meet
specific criteria
- Human Milk-Based Human Milk Fortifier for infants who meet specific criteria
Formula related services that the Milk Room provides:
- Twice daily preparation and delivery of specialized mixed infant
and pediatric formulas to the patient's in-room refrigerator
- Once daily delivery of ready-to-feed oral supplement and tube
feeding products
