With hemodialysis,
a machine acts as an artificial kidney by cleansing your blood. This has
to be done several times a week, and usually takes several hours at a time.
Each time wastes are removed and chemical balance is restored.
Being on hemodialysis is one tenth as efficient as having
normal kidney function, but most people can tolerate it. The biggest risk
is clotting at the access site. People usually feel very tired right after
they dialyze, then
feel better the next day before they start to gradually feel worse again. |
