You get the call and you are on your way. Remember, once you get the call, don’t eat or drink anything. Your stomach must be empty for the surgery.

Once you get to the hospital you will have a brief physical examination and will be prepared for surgery.

Be ready for the chance that the transplant may not happen. Your transplant may be called off if you have an infection or other medical problem that would interfere with surgery or recovery. The transplant could also be cancelled if there turns out to be something wrong with the donor kidney. A false alarm is disappointing, but if it does happen, remember that you haven’t lost your place on the list.
