Age: 24
Transplant: Kidney
Hometown: Pakistan
Saleem's Story: My name is Saleem Ahmed. I am 24 years old and come from a large family of 10 brothers and three sisters! I manage a general goods store that belongs to my family.
Prior to my illness, I took an active part in domestic cricket and even played for the Pakistan Under19 team. In 1985, one of my kidneys had to be removed because it was totally damaged by 13 stones. After my surgery I was warned not to lift anything very heavy but one day I picked up a suitcase. In February 1996, my remaining kidney began to give way. I even tried to hide my illness from my family and took all sorts of herbal remedies which only aggravated my condition. I started feeling helpless and guilty for encumbering my family with my illness and I finally collapsed in April.
I was operated upon soon after and my elder brother donated his kidney to me. I was lucky to make a complete recovery and after my rehabilitation was even encouraged by my doctors to take up athletics. I discovered that my forte seemed to be as a sprinter and in throwing the javelin. I participated in the First Transplant Games in Pakistan held in May this year. To the joy of my family I bagged three prizes in the 100m race, the relay, and the javelin throw. My success not only gave me confidence, but it also made me realise that I was completely fit. Today when I look back at what I suffered, it seems like a miracle that I have recovered and have been given the chance to lead a normal and healthy life.
My Message to the World: I hope that my story will encourage people to be donors as this gives life to people who have lost hope.
