Fact Sheet
Scope:
Styled after the Olympics, the 1996 U.S. Transplant Games takes place
August 22-25, 1996, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and includes four days
of spirited sports competition for gold, silver and bronze medals - an interactive "Kids' Time" program
- an athlete/health expo
- a patient and family educational symposium
- an evening social lounge
Who:
Athletes, ages 3-75, are recipients of life-saving organ transplants,
including heart, kidney, liver, lung, pancreas, and/or bone marrow.
Participating athletes dramatically demonstrate how they have returned to
full, healthy lives after transplantation.
Purpose:
A biennial event, the Transplant Games unites more than 3,000 dynamic
people (athletes, families, friends and spectators) in an extraordinary
showcase of athletic talent expressly to:
- promote the success of organ transplantation
- bring the life-saving importance of organ donation to the forefront of
public awareness
- recognize the 4,000 families each year who generously donate organs and
tissues of their loved ones
promote the athletic potential of all Americans
Reach:
National, regional and local: the 1994 Games enjoyed more than 600 million
media impressions, including coverage on CNN, The Today Show,
Good Morning
America, USA Today and Sports Illustrated.
