10:30 a.m. Press Conference
A third UMHS press conference was held, this one to provide an update on the patient who was unable to receive a double-lung transplant when the plane carrying organs for his transplant surgery crashed into Lake Michigan. Participants included On hand to make statements and answer questions were Andrew Chang, M.D., surgical director of lung transplant; Denise Landis, manager, Survival Flight; Christine Lau, M.D., thoracic surgeon; Jeffrey Punch, M.D., Chief of Medical Transplantation; Thomas Beyersdorf, executive director, Gift of Life Michigan.

At the end of what has been among the most tragic weeks in University of Michigan Health System history, there was a glimmer of hope for the future. This morning, the patient who was unable to receive a double-lung transplant when the plane carrying his organs crashed into Lake Michigan, is recovering in University Hospital after being transplanted with a second set of lungs. The U.S. Coast Guard has just announced that the rescue mission has been abandoned and that there are no survivors of the crash of the jet carrying six U-M Survival Flight crew members. We will continue to provide updates as we receive them.
