UMMS - Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceuticals Research and Development Postdoctoral Research Program
The application deadline for 2012 has passed
Brief Overview: The Joint Committee of the J&J-PRD/Michigan Postdoctoral Research Program requests proposals for support of post-doctoral fellows in several areas of cancer research. The type of research eligible for support within these broad areas include the following:
- Immuno-Oncology: reversal of immune suppression, enhancement of natural killer/effector cell targeting and activity, tumor inflammation
- Cancer Stem Cells; stem cell niche; regulatory pathways and cell surface targets; cancer dormancy/tumor initiating cells/micrometastasis
- Cytotoxic Biologics; enhanced effector function (ADCC/ADCP); directed effector cell killing; antibody drug conjugates
- Molecular regulatory mechanisms of cancer pathogenesis
Award criteria: Collaborations between J&J-PRD and Michigan investigators, in which post-doctoral fellows from underrepresented minority groups can be jointly mentored, are a priority of this program. Such collaborations need not be established prior to submission of the application, but jointly developed proposals will be most favorably reviewed.
Proposals will be evaluated for their relevance to the program areas of interest, the likelihood of collaboration between J&J-PRD and Michigan investigators, the quality of the research plan presented and the track record of the investigators who are applying. Those for which an appropriate post-doctoral trainee candidate is already identified will be viewed most favorably, but an otherwise highly meritorious proposal could be awarded support under the condition that a postdoctoral trainee candidate is subsequently identified and recruited.
Awards will be made for one year with an opportunity to extend for a second year if progress towards timeline goals is demonstrated. Support will cover competitive stipends for post-doctoral fellows and funds for the training lab to defray research expenses.
Postdoctoral Candidates: The highest priority will be given to candidates judged by the Joint Advisory Committee to be from groups underrepresented in the field of science and biomedical research. This includes African-American, Hispanic and Native-American scientists. Trainees and projects will be evaluated for a second year of support based on the progress towards the research goals established in the application.
Training: Research training will be guided by both Michigan and J&J-PRD advisors, and training will be carried out at J&J-PRD, as well as Michigan. Postdoctoral trainees may also participate in career development programs offered through the Office of Postdoctoral Studies at the University of Michigan.
Financial Requirements and Application Procedures: Please use this application along with the provided excel budget template. Financing for the project will be shared between J&J-PRD and the University of Michigan and the full cost of the program should be reflected on the budget form.
Details regarding salary & benefits, lab expenses, cost-sharing and indirect cost arrangements are outlined in the budget template and application form.
Finally, the university’s internal routing form (through eRPM) must be completed and institutionally signed prior to the submission of the proposal.
Awards: As projects are selected, contracts from J&J-PRD to the University of Michigan will be established. Only in exceptional cases may expenses be incurred prior to execution of the agreement. Exceptions should be orchestrated with the Joint Commission and contact listed in your award notification.
