Education

At the University of Michigan Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), our goal is to educate and prepare the next generation of national and international leaders in PM&R including clinical care, research, and education. We aspire to be a premier training program for PM&R residency, Spinal Cord Injury Medicine and Pain Management Medicine. We are committed to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education accreditation with commendation. We are dedicated to increasing the diversity of the physicians in PM&R to reflect the rich diversity of the patient populations that we serve.
The specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation is called physiatry. Our medical specialty provides an interdisciplinary approach to providing medical and rehabilitative care to children and adults. Our goal is to maximize recovery so our patients can achieve independence and community integration after physical injury, disease, or illness due to developmental delay. Physiatrists are  physicians dedicated to the diagnosis and medical management of the consequences of disease, injury and congenital disorders.
