How To Use This Toolkit

This toolkit is designed to build a foundation of knowledge and to suggest practical applications for developing best practices. Content includes conceptual discussions, seminal literature, and "tools and templates", integrating original material and material adapted from other sources. The toolkit contains chapters related to specific topics that are considered to be of prime importance to hospitals seeking to enhance patient safety and quality care. Each chapter is sub-divided into the following sections.

  • Brief introduction to the topic
  • Key Issues highlighting the most critical issues
  • Challenges that may be encountered when addressing issues
  • Primers and other seminal literature that enhance knowledge around the topic
  • Tools and Templates designed to help hospitals turn their conceptual knowledge into practical and achievable strategies

The toolkit will be of maximum value if shared with a wide variety of healthcare professionals. Suggested distribution includes hospital administrators, physician leaders, pharmacy, nursing, risk management, quality improvement, infection prevention and control departments and other healthcare professionals whose roles include the design and implementation of patient safety initiatives.
