The Division of Head and Neck Surgery is currently comprised of clinical faculty members with expertise and interest in head and neck surgery, microvascular reconstruction, laryngology, and general otolaryngology. The goal of the Division is to provide the resident with both a wide breadth and depth of clinical training in delivering state-of-the-art patient care, as well as to supervise research opportunities for the resident with a strong interest in an academic career.
The opportunity for intensive training is available in several specialized clinics specifically dealing with head and neck oncology, laryngology and voice disorders, skull base surgery, and disorders of the facial nerve.
The Division of Head and Neck Surgery is also an active participant in theUniversity of Michigan Cancer Center through the Head and Neck Oncology Program. This program is organized around the Division of Head and Neck Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology, and is a multidisciplinary clinical and basic research effort led by clinical investigators representing various clinical departments and divisions, as well as basic scientists from the areas of pathology, immunology, and biostatistics. The overall goal of the Head and Neck Oncology Program is to provide the most advanced and comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation for patients afflicted with cancers arising in the upper aerodigestive tract. Secondary goals are to provide a working basis and organization for effective collaboration among the many specialties involved in the care of such patients, and to promote interdisciplinary research opportunities.
Most patients receive their primary consultation and care within the Division of Head and Neck Surgery, and extensive collaboration has been established with the Department of Radiation Oncology and Pathology, as well as the Division of Hematology/Oncology. Patients with head and neck cancer are evaluated and discussed in the weekly multi-disciplinary Tumor Board Conference, where treatment and recommendations are made. Monthly program meetings of the division of Head and Neck Surgery are held to discuss administrative and research issues in the Head and Neck Oncology Program. A yearly retreat is held to evaluate scientific progress and future research directions.
