M3 Clerkship Information
Neurology
Course Objectives

By the end of the 3rd year neurology clerkship, all students should be able to:

A. Perform a thorough and reliable neurologic examination.

B. Identify the most likely site (or sites) of dysfunction in the nervous system to explain a patient's symptoms and signs (i.e. "localize the lesion"). Since all physicians--irrespective of their particular specialization--encounter patients with neurologic disease, our goal is to train physicians who can recognize neurologic disease, who feel comfortable with the evaluation and treatment of the neurologic problems seen most commonly in general medical practice, and who can identify those situations in which a neurologic consultation is appropriate. Thus, the secondary goals of the clerkship are to:

C. Learn a practical approach to the evaluation and management of some commonly encountered neurologic conditions--

1. Stroke
2. Seizures
3. Degenerative Diseases (Dementias and Movement Disorders)
4. Neuromuscular Diseases
5. Acute Mental Status Changes
6. Headaches and Back Pain
7. Dizziness
8. Visual Symptoms
9. Incontinence
10. Multifocal Disorders
11. Sleep Disorders
12. Pediatric and Geriatric Conditions

D. Evaluate and provide daily follow-up to a broad selection of patients with neurologic problems.

E. Learn to perform a lumbar puncture.
