FAQ

When is the application deadline date?
Complete applications must be postmarked by Feb. 1, 2013.

When will I know if I’m accepted into the program?
Students will be notified of their acceptance into the program by March 1, 2013.

Is the program open to non-Michigan residents?
No, the SSA program is closed to students who reside outside of the state of Michigan.

What are the dates of the program?
The 2013 program dates are Sunday, June 16 through Saturday, June 29.

What if my high school is still in session when the SummerScienceAcademy begins?
Schools are almost always willing to make arrangements for students to take their finals early if they are accepted into the Summer Science Academy.

I have another event to attend to at the same time the orientation begins. Do I have to attend the orientation?
Yes.  All students are to arrive on the first day of the program (Sunday, June 16, 2013) and participate in all weekday program activities during the two-week period.

Can I leave for the weekend?
No. Students are required to remain on-site for the two-week period. We provide a number of social activities and events for students to be involved in during the weekend, and having students absent disrupts the program schedule and bonding experience.

When is the enrollment fee due?
The enrollment fee is due two-weeks after you have been accepted into the program. (March 15, 2013) Note: The $100 enrollment fee is non-refundable.

Is the SummerScienceAcademy for minorities only?
No, the program is not limited to minority students and is open to all. We are particularly seeking participants from groups that are underrepresented in medicine, which includes geographically and financially disadvantaged students.  We are hoping for a very diverse participant pool.

Is my 9th grade daughter/son eligible?
No. The program is open to current 10th and 11th grade students only.

Is my 12th grade daughter/son eligible?
No. The program is open to current 10th and 11th grade students only.

To whom should the checks be made out?
All Checks should be payable to the University of Michigan Medical School.

What kind of photo should I send?
A passport type photo is preferred, but any photo that could be used for a yearbook type composite (shoulder and head shot) is acceptable.

Is my $100 enrollment fee refundable?
No. If you decide not to attend, SSA will not return your $100 enrollment fee.

Can I have visitors?
Only family members can visit participants, during evening breaks in the program schedule, and only with prior permission and notification of Academy staff.

Do we have to participate in evening activities?
Yes, all SSA participants are required to participate in evening activities.

Will we have access to a gym during the Academy?
No. However, participants have played outdoor games and sports and can make arrangements with the student leaders.

Can I bring my own food?
Yes, if you have an allergy or dietary restriction that is documented by your physician.  No perishable foods allowed. We provide three meals per day plus snacks.

Can I leave for a short period of time during the week?
