|Letter from the Office of Research Leadership|
From trials of the first safe polio vaccine, to our latest breakthroughs in treatments for neurological diseases, the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) continues to be at the forefront of pioneering research that impacts human health at a global level. The UMMS Office of Research is committed to supporting our researchers to position them for success.
The primary mission of the Office of Research is to foster an environment of innovation and efficiency that serves the UMMS research community and supports biomedical science from insight to impact. To that end, our team is constantly striving to enhance the research enterprise, including maintaining an investigator-focused infrastructure, facilitating and diversifying investigators' avenues for funding, and streamlining research processes.
UM is one of 55 Clinical & Translational Science Award institutions across the country and consistently ranks amongst U.S. News & World Report's top 10 medical research schools. Highlights of the last year in research include:
- $421+ million in externally-sponsored awards
- $40+ million in industry-sponsored research
- $13+ million in royalty revenue
- 131 invention disclosures
While these numbers are impressive, they only hint at what goes on behind the scenes. One of our greatest assets is the collegial, collaborative environment we offer researchers.
