Michigan Health Sciences Career Development Academy

The Michigan Health Sciences Career Development Academy is a six-week residential program sponsored by the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) Office for Health Equity & Inclusion (OHEI) for rising juniors, rising seniors and recent graduates attending any accredited college or university. The academy will focus on preparing participants for the extensive process of applying and gaining admission into medical school. The participants will attend workshops on:

Additionally, each participant will have a medical student mentor and be provided formal and informal opportunities to network with faculty and staff. Approximately 15 -20 participants will be a part of the Michigan Health Sciences Career Development Academy.

Purpose:

In alignment with the mission of the Office for Health Equity & Inclusion (OHEI), the Michigan Health Sciences Career Development Academy is committed to building a diverse workforce by exposing and preparing undergraduate and graduate students for biomedical careers. The academy is designed to academically and professionally develop participants for the medical school application process to pursue a biomedical career.

Students may not take academic classes or be engaged in other activities that would prevent them from attending all training sessions.

Financial Support

Stipends are $300.00 (before taxes) per week totaling $1,800 for 6-week period. Housing is provided.

Application Requirements

Thank you for your interest in the Michigan Health Sciences Career Development Academy (MHSCDA). You must submit your completed application before midnight on February 15, 2014. We encourage applicants to apply early. Acceptance to the program is made on a rolling admission basis.

A completed application includes:

  1. Submitted online application
  2. Three letters of recommendation​
    • Two letters of recommendation from faculty members teaching science courses
    • One letter of recommendation from academic advisor or employer
  3. ​Official or unofficial transcript from your institution(s)
