The Center for the History of Medicine was founded in 1990 and is a unit of the University of Michigan Medical School.
The mission of the Center for the History of Medicine is to conduct scholarly research on the history, culture and philosophy of medicine; to instruct and collaborate with our students, colleagues, and the broader community on these topics; to place contemporary medical dilemmas in context with past events and, thus, help inform public health and medical policies.
The CHM works with various university units on programs and projects, including:
- Science, Technology and Society Program
- In 2000, we took part in creating the Sesquicentennial Time Line and Exhibits, a digital repository of the rich history of the University of Michigan Medical School and Hospitals from 1850 to the present.
- The CHM partners with the Bentley Historical Library on many projects including the Center for the History of Medicine Oral History Project.
- The CHM is a key content provider to Medicine at Michigan
