Dr. Blaum has spent considerable time in national policy service involving clinical care for older Americans. She was a member of the expert panel for the Assessing Care of the Vulnerable Elderly (ACOVE) effort, and has served as a United States Public Health Services Primary Care Policy Fellow. She was a member of the panel that developed the American Geriatrics Society/California Health Care Foundation Guidelines for the Care of Diabetes in the Elderly. She is also involved with national quality performance initiatives in Medicare and is the American Geriatrics Society Representative to the AMA-sponsored Physician Consortium for Practice Improvement. She is Chair of the American Geriatrics Society Quality Practice Management Committee, a member of the National Quality Forum’s Steering Committee on Hospital Outcomes and Efficiency, and sits on the Executive Committee of the American Medical Association Physician Consortium for Quality Improvement. She also serves on the Board of Directors for MPRO.
Caroline Blaum is a professor of internal medicine and geriatrics at the University of Michigan and a research scientist at the Ann Arbor VA Geriatrics Research, Education and Clinical Center. Her research concerns disability, geriatrics syndromes and frailty, diabetes in older adults, and long-term care and is supported by the National Institute on Aging, the Veterans’ Administration Rehabilitation Research and Development Merit Award Program, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Her specialty is care delivery models for older adults and she is currently the project lead for U of M’s Faculty Group Practice Medicare “Pay for Performance” Medicare Demonstration Project. She was medical director of MCare’s Medicare HMO and has also served as a nursing home medical director.
Dr. Blaum is a practicing geriatrician at the University of Michigan. She sees patients in clinic, at a nearby nursing home and in-patient at the University Hospital. She is also on staff at the Ann Arbor VA Hospital and rounds in both the geriatrics rehabilitation unit and on the medical service. In addition to her clinical duties, she is active in teaching internal medicine and geriatrics to medical students, house officers and geriatrics fellows at the University.
Dr. Blaum graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School and did her internal medicine residency at the Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia University in New York City. She has also earned a master’s degree in clinical research design and statistical analysis from The University of Michigan School of Public Health.
