Public event aims to increase number of women screened for cervical cancer

Ann Arbor, MI. -- A 10-minute Pap test could save your life.

There are no symptoms in the earliest stages of cervical cancer, but the disease is curable if detected early through a Pap test, which is one of the most reliable and effective cancer screening tests available.

To schedule a free screening, call the U-M Cancer AnswerLine™ at 1-800-865-1125.

The University of Michigan Health System will offer a free Pap test screening from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, March 26. The screenings will be held at the Briarwood Building 2, Suite B, 400 E. Eisenhower Parkway, Ann Arborgoing to a new website.

Women who are 21 or older, women who have not had a Pap test in the last two years and women who do not have medical coverage for a Pap test are eligible for the free screening.

The Pap test screenings typically take less than 10 minutes. The test identifies the earliest signs of cervical cancer and cervical cells that could become cancerous.

Appointments are now being accepted. Registration is required.

More than 12,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with cervical cancer this year and more than 4,000 will die of the disease, according to the National Cancer Institutegoing to a new website.

The screening is sponsored by the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center Community Outreach Office, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Women's Health Program and the Program for Multicultural Health.
